AMC Gremlin (1970–78)
The AMC Gremlin, from the 1970s, is often cited as one of the most infamously poor cars ever produced. During the 1960s and 70s, the demand for compact cars increased significantly. In response, AMC modified the AMC Hornet, shortening it and adjusting some features to create the Gremlin.
In practice, the Gremlin’s design essentially removed the back section of the Hornet, giving it a peculiar appearance and making it more challenging to drive. The modifications required changes to the suspension system, and the car’s heavy engine further impaired its handling. Additionally, many drivers were dismayed by the absence of basic features, adding to its unpopularity.
